How to be more interesting without trying too hard

It doesn’t have to be so complicated

There comes a point between who you were and who you’re becoming where you develop an intense craving for something different, a change in how you’re living and showing up in the world. A new life. And I’m not talking about wanting to be busier or the smartest person in the room, but simply a life that you’re proud of, want to dwell in, and talk about.

Being an interesting person exceeds the ceiling of who you know, your job title, or what you drive. Sometimes it’s quiet and shows up in how you notice things, what activities you participate in, what you decide is important to you, and how others remember you.

If you’ve been wanting to become more interesting, that doesn’t mean you want to change who you are in totality. It means you want to be more intentional with how you’re living; it means you want to expand your palate in different areas of your life.

Here are seven things you can start doing today that will make you a more interesting person.

Eat your fears

The fear of failure. The fear of embarrassing yourself. The fear of things not working out. The fear of losing people. Whatever fear has kidnapped you and held you hostage for however long, address and manage it so it can release its grip. Fearless people have accomplished and created the greatest things. They have a sort of captivating nonchalance that mimics a soft rebellion.

Do things without needing an audience

Having private hobbies, obsessions, or guilty pleasures will help shape you in more ways than you think. They’re special because they’re genuine; you’re not doing or partaking in these things for wandering eyes or for the sole purpose of having something to talk about. You’ll become more interested in yourself after seeing what you’ve made, watched, written, studied, and so on, on your own, by yourself. Create and learn freely without feeling obligated to broadcast it. Interesting people don’t always need external validation. Do things simply for the plot.

Read books

A YouGov poll revealed that in 2025, 40 percent of Americans didn’t read one book, so even if you only read a single book last year, you’re far ahead of a lot of people. Books give you something to talk about and broaden your perspective. They challenge your thinking. They entertain. Don’t feel pressured to pick up complex or philosophical texts because of how you think they’ll make you look. Read fiction. Read silly romances. Read what fits your lifestyle. Read to learn. Read what will make you want to read.

Say yes more

Say yes to going out and trying the things that you have saved on your many mood boards. Say yes to what’s outside of your typical routine. If you’ve been sitting on a bucket or goals list for so long, finally doing what you want and trying something new will feel like a radical thing.

Use your brain

People have gotten extremely comfortable with forming opinions based on what the internet, friends and family, or ChatGPT tells them, that they’ve forgotten how to use their own brain. That’s a scary realization. Knowing how to formulate thoughts and make decisions on your own is a beautiful thing. Having a functioning brain is an often-overlooked blessing. Put your brain to work. You’ll be just fine, I promise.

Indulge in hobbies without attaching the dollar sign

Don’t feel obligated to monetize every hobby. Some hobbies are meant to be just that. Not every hobby will be assigned to financially support you; some things come into your life to support you spiritually or emotionally. An activity could be introduced to you for internal fulfillment, and that’s it. Your hobby of choice just might be the one thing in your busy, demanding life that doesn’t require much thinking and allows you to reach a flow state.  Your only responsibility is to be present. Let fun things remain fun things.

Show up as yourself

You’re probably already more interesting than you think. Others can tell when you’re being disingenuous, so you might as well show up as yourself. Authenticity is so attractive.
